Before You Hire a Fire Risk Assessor
Use this as your checklist of essential steps to follow before appointing an assessor.
1 Determine the Risk Level of Your Premises
- Foundation Level (Low Risk):
Ideal for simple, low-risk environments (e.g. small offices, small retail shops) - Intermediate Level (Medium Risk):
For more complex premises such as larger retail units, industrial workshops, or warehouses - Advanced Level (High Risk):
For highly complex or high-risk environments (e.g. buildings with sleeping accommodation, care homes, large factories or mixed-use high-rise sites)
2 Search a verified register
Always look for assessors on trusted, independent registers to ensure legitimacy and verified competence.
- Individual Registers: NFRAR
- Company Certification: BAFE
3 Request Documents & Verify Credentials
Make sure to ask for, and carefully check:
- Individual assessor registration (from one of the recognised bodies)
- Company certification (if your building is high-risk)
- Valid professional indemnity insurance
4 Confirm Experience with Similar Premises
An assessor may technically have the right certifications, but for the best results you should ensure they have hands-on experience with buildings like yours especially if you have sleeping accommodation, care facilities, or large industrial sites.
