Blog: Is argumentation socially beneficial?

July 26, 2017 by Sefydliad Rank

I think the world would be a better place if we could learn how to argue with each other better. I’m not talking about shouty and aggressive interactions; which are ultimately a combination of clamorous monologues masked as conversation. I’m talking about the ability to converse with others, as a way of making sense of the world and our ideas, beliefs and biases.

Individual reasoning can only really be improved by seeing or hearing a different point of view. It’s the basis of restorative practice, of conflict and healing resolution and also, in my view, of community development. Imagine if you had never been challenged on your beliefs or perceptions? What might you have done that you would now regret? In my adult life I’ve changed my mind on so many issues relating to religion, politics, class, family and yes, even pensions. If I’d never been encouraged or challenged to consider different world views or had the privilege of listening to the personal histories and stories of others, my views would not have shifted and that means that I would have missed the opportunity to grow and develop and evolve.

Arguments that are one way or aggressive are harmful and counterproductive. I’m talking about argumentation, which is an art form; its reciprocal, it’s articulating a world view, it’s being open to hearing another perspective, it’s about having the ability to change your mind and the confidence to communicate it. Essentially, it requires a certain quality within a relationship. And it’s been on my mind a lot recently due to a lack of argumentation in the EU referendum which wasn’t a sophisticated debate but a ruthless cock fight, using high grade PR tricks in place of sticks and stones. And this is the key; for argumentation to happen there has to be connections and relationships to wider networks.  In other words, access to a range of views is productive.

Research highlights that relationships are pivotal to increasing community capital, defined as ‘the sum of assets including relationships in a community and the value that arises from these’. The 2015 RSA Report (insert link) highlights that knowing someone in a position to change things or to offer practical help is an indicator of community capital. And access is uneven, with 60% of people surveyed not knowing anyone who could influence or change things locally. The main outcome of the research was this; people fare better when they have good relationships around them. We need relationships and networks.

At The Rank Foundation, we continuously seek to understand the barriers to community capital. We work in collaboration to identify joint intentions and implement solutions. We want all people to know at least one person they can turn to for practical help or to influence change. Connected communities are stronger communities. And it is in this spirit that we look to invest in and develop our own network; so that we can engage in argumentation, so that we can articulate our world view as well as really listen to others, so that we remain open to change, so that we evolve.

RankNet is the bedrock to this commitment. We will create the conditions for all of our grant funded projects, people and places to seek support, share learning, access opportunities, ask for practical help and connect with someone who can influence change.

Please let us know if you disagree.

Time to Shine Residential – Windermere

July 12, 2017 by Natalie

The 2017 Time to Shine Interns are now 6 months into their internships at their organisations, so The Rank Foundation run a ‘halfway point’ residential to check in with the interns and their managers.

The residential was held at the very beautiful Low Wood Bay Hotel in Windermere, and three groups of interns and their managers visited for 24 hours over 3 days. Activities included film making with our good friends Vivid Echo (videos to follow on RankNet), preparing for the showcase at the Blackpool Conference in October, Mindful Leadership with Dr Jan Goss and pottery with Crafty Monkeys.

The weather was unfortunately not kind to us, so most of the activities were restricted to inside, but the groups appeared to have a good time engaging with the activities and getting to know each other a little more.

We would like to thank the interns and their managers for traveling the long journey, and engaging so well in the activities.

New grant awarded to Belvoir Cricket & Countryside Trust

July 3, 2017 by Kerry Whitehead-Dymond

We are pleased to announce our new three year grant to Belvoir Cricket & Countryside Trust, who work to influence children’s lives through sport and education; encouraging healthy lifestyles through sports participation and enhancing the educational opportunities for local able-bodied and disabled school children.  The Belvoir Cricket & Countryside Trust was set up in 2008 and is a registered charity focused on getting young people active and engaged in the rural countryside and in sport. In the nine years since the Trust was formed we have reached over 16,000 youngsters from mainstream & special schools and local rural communities.

Rural isolation is a significant issue for many.  This is often addressed by a focus on the elderly – but our youngsters and young families will re-generate rural areas. There is also a significant issue around the mass departure of young people from the countryside.  Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland make up the bottom 3 rural areas in the country for students not returning as referenced in the Commission for Rural Communities site. The commission has produced papers on the Big Society, Children in the Countryside and Extended Services for Rural Schools.

The Trust runs a number of different projects:

Cricket and Countryside School Days

27 days are run through the summer term offering mainstream & special schools the opportunity to come to the Castle Estate and take part in a morning of cricket coaching followed by an afternoon of interactive sessions with local ‘countryside’ workers such as a farmer, woodsman, gamekeeper and huntsman.

The programme fills a gap in the provision of education for primary school children as identified by the Countryside Alliance who believe that outdoor learning should be a part of every child’s education.

Special Needs Programme

The Trust delivers a six-week winter programme of Kwik and Table Cricket to children with learning and physical disabilities in 15 schools in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. Following the coaching the schools are invited take part in a schools’ table cricket competition linked with the Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire County Cricket Boards and the Lords Taverners.

In July, the schools attend a Cricket and Countryside School Day at the Belvoir Castle. The children take part in a cricket session led by Trust Chief Executive Darren Bicknell and a team of coaches in the morning. In the afternoon’s, they are taken up to Belvoir Castle to take part in countryside educational activities; learning from local people such as farmers, gamekeepers and huntsman while also seeing birds of prey, gun dog and fishing demonstrations.

Belvoir Bees Cricket Coaching

A 20-week programme which runs through the summer at 7 rural small towns & villages providing regular 90 minutes’ activity on a weekly basis whilst delivering high quality coaching giving children from 4-11 years old the opportunity to play sport and learn & develop new skills.

We develop local adults into becoming volunteers in the coaching programme and aim to involve all members of the family in the activities through social interaction in a rural community.

Teach Cricket Programme

This is a 3-week programme of cricket coaching delivered in 20 local primary schools, all of which were outside the boundaries / catchment for the well-known Chance to Shine project. We give schools access to high quality coaching to enhance their delivery of the National Curriculum and the opportunity to develop their staff through CPD training.

Volunteer Programme

Our volunteer programme recruits, trains and mentor’s local community members to deliver cricket and/or education to youngsters.  The Trust Director delivers training workshops for our cricket volunteers enabling them to deliver cricket coaching to children. The Trust gives focused skills training for the specific needs of the Trust projects – without getting bogged down by administration/qualifications.
